Sulfur dioxide detected in a food sample at the market in Ma On Shan

The Center for Food Safety detected sulfur dioxide in a fresh beef sample from a provision shop in Sunshine Town Market in Ma On Shan. Sulfur dioxide is a preservative that cannot be used in fresh meat, The result showed that the sample contained an amount of sulfur dioxide only suitable for people with allergies. If this was consumed, symptoms such as breathlessness, headache, or nausea may occur. The Center for Food Safety is following up on relevant violations and will initiate prosecution if there is sufficient evidence. According to the Preservatives in Food Regulations, it is illegal to add sulfur dioxide to fresh and chilled meat, and the maximum penalty is a fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for 6 months.
