A cow was hit by a taxi in Ma On Shan and died on the spot. At 19:00 last night, a New Territories taxi was traveling along Sai Sha Road towards Sha Tin when it approached the Nian Wah Road roundabout where it hit a cow causing multiple injuries on its body, bleeding from his mouth and nose and left lying on the road. The front of the taxi was severely damaged with its windshield broken and air bags deployed. The driver claimed that he was not able to brake in time because the cow had suddenly crossed the road. The Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were notified and representatives arrived at the scene. Veterinarians later confirmed that the cow was dead. The taxi driver involved assisted the police in the investigation, and the cause of the accident is under investigation. It is estimated that due to the development and road reconstruction projects in the area in recent years, the cow was forced to walk off the road. Animal volunteers suggests that the government put up signboards to remind motorists of animals passing by to reduce accidents.
