Northeast Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 is in effect until at least noon.

6/9/2024 7:48
The Northeast Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 is now in effect and will remain in force until at least 12 noon today. The Observatory will assess the time to change the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 in the afternoon depending on the movement of Super Typhoon Capricorn and the changes in wind strength in Hong Kong. At 7 a.m., Capricorn gathered about 390 kilometers south-southwest of Hong Kong and was expected to move west or west-northwest at a speed of about 15 kilometers per hour, crossing the northern part of the South China Sea and moving roughly towards the area from Hainan Island to Leizhou Peninsula. In the past few hours, Capricorn has taken a more westerly path, but the strong wind areas associated with it will still affect the Pearl River Estuary area this morning; at the same time, the strong rain bands associated with Capricorn will bring strong winds and heavy showers to Hong Kong on the 8th. The gale or storm signal will be maintained until at least 12 noon today. The Observatory will assess the time
to change the strong wind signal No. 3 in the afternoon depending on the movement of Capricorn and the changes in local winds. There are very strong waves and swells in the sea. People should stay away from the shore and stop all water activities. In the past hour, the highest sustained wind speeds recorded in Ngong Ping, Cheung Chau Beach and North Point were 93, 66 and 51 kilometers per hour respectively, and the highest gusts exceeded 126, 84 and 69 kilometers per hour respectively.
