Ukrainian attack cuts power to Russia-held parts of the Zaporizhzhia region
An attack by Ukraine's military cut power on Friday to Russian-held parts of the Zaporizhzhia region and emergency crews are working to restore it, an official installed by Russian authorities said.
"There are power outages in localities in the southern part of Zaporizhzhia region. Repair work is underway to restore it," Yevgeny Belitsky, the Russia-appointed governor of Russian-controlled areas of the region, said on Telegram. "The reason for the outages is an enemy attack on the region's energy infrastructure."
Ukrainian media outlets posted video clips of what they said had been an attack on a substation in the town of Melitopol, showing a large fireball rising over an industrial area.
Zaporizhzhia is one of four Ukrainian regions Moscow annexed in 2022, seven months after its full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour.
Russian forces control a little more than 70% of the two southern regions, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. However, Ukrainian officials say Kyiv's forces have recaptured some localities in the region in recent weeks.
