Six rescued, one missing after fishing vessel sinks off Sesimbra

Six crew members were rescued and one remained missing after a fishing vessel sank off the coast of Sesimbra, south of Lisbon, on Friday morning, the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center said.



The alert was received at 1025 (0925 GMT) from the nearby fishing vessel Sebastiao Paulo, which recovered the six survivors from the water.



Five sustained minor injuries and one was seriously hurt. All seven crew members are Indonesian nationals.



Search operations for the missing person were launched involving four Portuguese Navy vessels, a Sesimbra lifeboat, two Maritime Police vessels and a Portuguese Air Force aircraft.



Sesimbra municipal civil protection councillor Lenia do Anjos said five of the six rescued individuals were transported to hospital and called for search operations to continue with all available resources.



"The most important thing now is that the search for the missing person continues and that all rescue services are on the ground doing everything within their reach," she said.
