5 killed in head-on collision in southern Peru

At least five people were killed early Saturday in a head-on collision between an SUV and a station wagon on a highway in southern Peru's Ica region.

The crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at kilometer 352 of the Pan-American Highway South, on the stretch between Ica and Palpa, state-run Andina news agency reported, citing the Peruvian National Police.

Preliminary investigations suggested the SUV driver may have crossed into the opposite lane, causing the collision.

All five occupants of the station wagon, which was traveling from Ica to Abancay, were killed. The front of the vehicle was completely destroyed by the impact.
