Israeli operation in N. Gaza kills 770 Palestinians in 19 days

24/10/2024 6:16
The Israeli military operation in the Jabalia camp and its surrounding areas in the northern Gaza Strip has killed more than 770 Palestinians in the past 19 days, the Hamas-run Gaza media office said on Wednesday.
The ongoing operation has wounded more than 1,000 others and left dozens missing, as many civilians were forcibly displaced from their homes and residential neighborhoods, the office said in a statement.
Wounded and sick people in the northern Gaza Strip need urgent and rapid health and medical care, but it is currently unavailable due to the destruction of the health system and the shortage of medical supplies, it added.
Escalating violence has forced UN workers to postpone polio vaccinations in northern Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on social media platform X on Wednesday.
"People are living a nightmare -- weeks with almost no food, water, or aid. Many trapped under rubble," it added. "Immediate action is required to reach children with the vaccine and avert further tragedies."
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Oct. 6 that as evidence indicated the presence of militants and their infrastructure in the area of Jabalia, as well as efforts by Hamas to rebuild its operational capabilities in the area, the army has begun operating in the Jabalia area.
"This operation to systematically dismantle terrorist infrastructure in the area will continue as long as required in order to achieve its objectives," it added.
Israel has been conducting a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage.
The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 42,792, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.
