Interference with fair trials undermines the rule of law in Hong Kong

25/10/2024 6:17
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government strongly condemns the recent undue pressure exerted overseas on the non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal, Mr Qi Hin-yi, and blatant interference in ongoing criminal cases in Hong Kong.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said that any organization or individual's attempt to use political power or any other means to put pressure on judges and judicial officers and interfere with fair trials is obviously an act that undermines the rule of law in Hong Kong and should be severely condemned.

Regarding Lai Chi-ying’s case involving the Hong Kong National Security Law, the Hong Kong government pointed out that since the relevant legal procedures are still in progress, no one should comment, let alone make inappropriate interference; emphasizing that all cases, including this case, are strictly based on Evidence and handling in accordance with the law. All defendants were strictly in accordance with the applicable laws of Hong Kong and received a fair trial under the protection of the Basic Law and the Hong Kong Bill of Rights.
