An overnight Russian drone attack on the Kyiv region killed one person, injured at least four and set several houses on fire, Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the region that surrounds the Ukrainian capital, said on Wednesday.
The body of a civilian was found in a residential house that caught fire as a result of the attack, Kalashnyk wrote in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
He said that at least four other people in the region were injured overnight and at least five homes and two multi-storey residential buildings were damaged in the attacks. Kalashnyk posted several photos on Telegram of firefighters battling large flames at night in what appeared to be residential buildings.
Throughout the night, Reuters witnesses said they heard blasts in and around Kyiv and what sounded like air defence systems in operation.
According to Ukraine's air force data, Kyiv, the region surrounding it and the eastern half of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours starting at around 2000 GMT on Tuesday.
Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war, which Russia launched three years ago against its smaller neighbour. Thousands of civilians have been killed in the war, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.
