Police successfully repelled a terrorist attack on a checkpost and killed three assailants in Dera Ghazi Khan district of Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, said a statement on Saturday.
A spokesperson of the Punjab Police said that 20 to 25 terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the Lakhani checkpost in the district bordering northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday night, attacking with mortars, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, and other heavy weapons.
"Despite the intensity of the attack, police forces, the Elite Force, and the Special Operations Unit (SOU) mounted a strong defense, forcing the attackers to retreat," said the spokesperson.
The official said that bodies of the three terrorists were found after the terrorist attack was repulsed by the police personnel, adding that signs on the ground showed that several terrorists were also injured in the fire exchange.
In response to the attack, security in border areas has been tightened, and search operations are underway to eliminate potential threats, said the spokesperson.
No group claimed responsibility of the attack yet.
