A fatal traffic accident occurred in the South Bay Tunnel. A male tunnel employee who was handling the traffic accident was hit by a private car that cut across the lane and was injured. He was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment and was confirmed dead.
At about 12:00 am, a vehicle was driving along the slow lane of the tunnel towards Kowloon. When it reached the middle of the tunnel, it broke down. Tunnel staff immediately closed a section of the slow lane out of Kowloon and turned on the lights at the tunnel entrance to notify drivers. Two tunnel staff placed an ice cream bucket and directed traffic at the scene. At that time, a private car drove into the tunnel along the middle line. It was suspected that it did not pay attention to the road conditions at the scene. It first cut into the slow lane and hit the ice cream cone, and then hit one of the male tunnel staff members. It was launched about 5 meters and fell to the stone curb inside the nearby crash barrier. Another tunnel staff member called the police.
The injured 61-year-old tunnel employee was conscious and was sent to Princess Margaret Hospital for emergency treatment, but eventually died. The male driver involved was not injured and assisted the police in the investigation. The police closed the slow lane to investigate the cause of the accident.
