Latvia joins UN outer space treaty

24/5/2025 7:29
Latvia has officially joined the Outer Space Treaty, the foundational United Nations agreement governing peaceful space activities, the Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

The treaty, signed in 1967 and now ratified by 116 countries, promotes peace, cooperation, and responsible behavior in outer space.

The treaty is of utmost importance to uphold fundamental international norms that ensure the peaceful use of outer space, the ministry said, adding that Latvia's accession underscores its commitment to international space norms and equitable access to space resources.

Latvia became a member of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 2024.
