The MTR is implementing a crowd management system

2/8/2025 6:08
For crowd control at the Kai Tak Sports Park, the MTR has implemented two systems at Kai Tak and Sung Wong Toi stations: a "passenger flow prediction model" and a "smart diversion system" to assist with passenger diversion. The system is also considering future deployment at other stations.

The MTR stated that the passenger flow prediction model, which can predict passenger distribution and travel routes, was deployed last year and was also used during a Coldplay concert in April this year. The analysis results were consistent with actual conditions and were effective. Passenger data from over 100 large-scale events has been collected, enabling pre-planning of station management and train frequency. The model also allows for online simulations based on various scenarios, making it suitable for pre-emptive deployment. The MTR is exploring its feasibility for other emergency situations, including line disruptions.

Regarding the smart diversion system, the MTR stated that it uses image analysis and artificial intelligence to monitor real-time passenger flow and assist staff in passenger diversion. The system will be introduced in stations to accommodate different scenarios, such as Admiralty Station, which has multiple entrances and exits. Or Tsim Sha Tsui Station where large events are held nearby.
