14/10/2024 5:48
A fatal industrial accident occurred in Ho Man Tin. A 50-year-old Nepalese male worker who was dismantling a scaffold fell from a height. He was sent to the hospital and was confirmed dead after being rescued. The Labor Department issued a temporary suspension notice to the contractor involved.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 am Sunday on the outer wall of an international school that was undergoing construction on Man Fook Road in Ho Man Tin. The male worker involved was dismantling a scaffolding at a height of 15 meters. He was suspected of accidentally slipping and fell to the pavement of Princess Margaret Road. He suffered a serious head injury and fell into a coma. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and later died.

The police cordoned off the scene for investigation and classified the case as an industrial accident. Labor Department personnel also went to the scene to investigate the cause of the accident and issued a temporary suspension notice to the contractor involved, stopping the contractor from dismantling, changing and using the bamboo scaffolding on the exterior wall of the building. Work can not resume until the department is satisfied that the contractor has taken measures to eliminate any hazards.

The Labor Department is paying close attention to the incident and is deeply saddened by the death of a worker. It expresses its deep condolences to the family of the deceased.

The Industrial Injury Rights Association pointed out that there are still loopholes in the current supervision. The relevant project started last Friday, and the worker involved was responsible for demolishing the shed. There were safety belts on site, but it was not sure whether the worker involved was buckled up. It also pointed out that he is the breadwinner of the family. The family members include a wife and two minor children. They hope that the employer can help handle the funeral arrangements of the deceased worker and support the worker’s family’s short-term living difficulties.
