The Leisure and Cultural Services Department stated that eight animals died in the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens yesterday, including a white-rumped vervet monkey, a squirrel monkey, three cotton-top tamarins and three white-faced monk monkeys. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has contacted the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and arranged for an autopsy on the demised animals to learn the cause of death. The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens will temporarily suspend the opening of the mammal area in the park from today to conduct comprehensive disinfection and cleaning work, pending laboratory test results. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will closely monitor the conditions of other animals while other facilities in the park will remain open as usual during this period.
