S. Korea's prosecution seeks extension of president Yoon's detention

25/1/2025 13:30
South Korea's prosecution once again sought the extension of President Yoon Suk-yeol's detention until Feb. 6 for supplementary investigation, multiple media outlets reported on Saturday.

The prosecution's special investigative headquarters requested Yoon's extended arrest from the Seoul Central District Court just four hours after the court denied it on Friday night as the prosecution only needs to indict Yoon's case.

The prosecution stressed the need for its supplementary investigation after Yoon's repeated refusal to be questioned by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.

The state anti-corruption agency referred Yoon's case to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on Thursday.

The court was forecast to decide on the extension late Saturday. If rejected once again, the prosecution is expected to indict Yoon under detention for insurrection and other charges.

A warrant to keep Yoon in custody for up to 20 days, including the arrest period, was issued by another Seoul court on Jan. 19, making Yoon the country's first incumbent president to be formally arrested.
