Israel rejects "all proposals" to withdraw from southern Lebanon

20/3/2025 6:10
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed on Wednesday that Israel has refused all Lebanese proposals to vacate five occupied hills in southern Lebanon and replace its forces with international troops, the National News Agency reported.

Speaking to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during her visit to Beirut, Aoun stated that diplomatic efforts and negotiations are ongoing to resolve the issue.

The president emphasized that Israel's continued occupation of Lebanese territory obstructs the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and contradicts the agreement reached last November.

He highlighted that the Lebanese army, which has deployed across all areas vacated by Israel, is fully carrying out its duties in maintaining security and confiscating unauthorized weapons.

Aoun also pointed out that Israel still holds Lebanese prisoners, having released only five of them, while Lebanon remains committed to securing the return of all detainees.

Baerbock, for her part, conveyed Germany's concern over the situation in Lebanon, particularly in the south, and underscored the importance of implementing reforms following the formation of the new government.

Baerbock also reaffirmed, during her meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, her country's continued support for Lebanon during this phase through economic and social projects, as well as ongoing support for the Lebanese army and the UN peacekeeping forces.
