At least 14 civilians were killed on Sunday when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched artillery strikes in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur in western Sudan, according to local volunteer groups.
"Fourteen civilians were killed today as a result of artillery shelling by the RSF militia," the Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher said in a statement.
It noted that the shelling targeted Naivasha Market in the Abu Shouk displacement camp, as well as several neighborhoods in northern El Fasher.
The Abu Shouk Camp Emergency Room also confirmed in a statement that fourteen people were killed in artillery shelling by the RSF.
"The extent of the losses is significant, and due to the security situation, we have not yet been able to determine the full number of dead and injured," it added.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Doctors Network, a volunteer group, said in a statement that 19 people were killed and 28 others injured in what it described as "deliberate shelling" by the RSF targeting neighborhoods and the Abu Shouk displacement camp in El Fasher.
There was no immediate comment from the RSF regarding the attack.
Since May 10, 2024, fierce fighting has erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF in El Fasher, part of a broader conflict that has engulfed Sudan since April 2023.
The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions of people both inside and outside the country.
