Nineteen people were killed and 13 others injured after a lorry overturned in the western Uganda district of Hoima, police said Wednesday.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, told Xinhua by phone that the accident happened Tuesday night while the fuel truck was carrying traders from a market in neighboring Buliisa district.
"The lorry failed to brake, lost control, fell and overturned, killing 19 people on the spot," Hakiza said, adding that the injured were rushed to hospital.
Hakiza said overloading may be the cause of the accident, with the lorry carrying both passengers and merchandise.
A Uganda police report released in February indicated that 5,144 people were killed in road crashes in 2024, up from 4,806 in 2023 and 4,534 in 2022.
