A fire broke out at a house in eastern Baghdad's Ur neighborhood on Wednesday morning, killing seven family members, a civil defense source said.
Civil defense teams, though responding quickly, were unable to rescue the victims due to the rapid spread of the flames. They later managed to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to surrounding houses, Alaa Mohammed from the civil defense told Xinhua.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, Mohammed said.
Iraq has recently witnessed frequent fire incidents as many parts of the country undergo scorching summer heat that reaches 50 degrees Celsius.
In July, a massive fire broke out at a hypermarket in Kut, the capital of Iraq's eastern Wasit province, killing at least 61 people. Days later, a fire in a civilian house in eastern Baghdad killed at least four and severely injured two others.
