China says relations with Japan at 'critical stage'

26/7/2024 16:57
China and Japan relations are at a critical stage of retreat if they do not advance, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday in talks with his Japan counterpart.

Wang met Japan Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa at the ASEAN Summit in Laos and said he hopes Japan will establish "an objective and correct understanding of China, and pursue a positive and rational China policy," according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry.

Kamikawa stressed cooperation between the two countries has great potential, but there were also "unresolved issues."

Japan has aligned itself with the United States in ongoing semiconductor curbs on China, which has angered Beijing.

Kamikawa said Japan's semiconductor export restrictions are not aimed at any specific country, and Japan is willing to maintain constructive communication with China and handle them properly.
