Preliminary results announced in poll for Macao SAR's chief executive election

        The voting process for the 2024 election to choose members of the Chief Executive Election Committee of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) was completed Sunday evening, according to Macao's government information bureau.
        Preliminary results for the 344 seats in the poll for the Chief Executive Election Committee were available. Together with other members elected according to the election law, they will form a 400-member committee, which is broadly representative and responsible for nominating and electing the new-term chief executive of the Macao SAR.
        A total of 5,521 representatives of eligible legal-person voters cast ballots, representing a voter turnout rate of 88.12 percent, said the bureau.
        Song Man Lei, president of the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Chief Executive Election of the Macao SAR, pointed out that the voter turnout for this first election of Chief Executive Election Committee members since the revision of the election law was higher than the previous term, reflecting support of the voters for the election and indicating that the newly revised election law has been fully implemented.
        According to the Macao SAR's Chief Executive Election Law, the General Audit Committee will verify the preliminary results starting on Aug. 12, and verification results will be published in a notice.
