26/9/2024 6:07
The Hong Kong SAR government strongly condemns and opposes the report on the academic freedom situation here in Hong Kong issued by Human Rights Watch and the Hong Kong Democratic Council, saying that the content of the report is malicious and smearing, and is biased to generalize.

The Hong Kong government points out the fallacies in the report to correct the situation such as the emphasis of the basic rights of Hong Kong residents and freedoms have always been guaranteed at the constitutional level and Hong Kong's laws to safeguard national security, with special emphasis on human rights, are protected in accordance with the Basic Law, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, applicable rights and freedoms under the relevant provisions of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government has noticed that most of the interviewees cited in the report use pseudonyms, which is a common tactic used by anti-China forces. It makes it difficult to determine whether the interviewees are real people and casts doubt on the authenticity and credibility of the report. In response to the report's false content and irresponsible remarks that Hong Kong's academic freedom has been weakened, the Hong Kong government emphasized that academic freedom is an important social value that Hong Kong has always respected and is the cornerstone of the success of Hong Kong's higher education sector. The Hong Kong government has always been committed to safeguarding it.

Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are both guaranteed by the Basic Law. The Hong Kong government will continue to support the expansion and quality improvement of institutions, promote academic exchanges and research cooperation, promote a more diverse campus culture, and improve the quality of institutions and students in a globalized environment. competitiveness.
