Continued heavy rainfall in Nepal caused floods and landslides

30/9/2024 5:52
Heavy rainfall in Nepal has triggered floods and landslides, with the death toll rising to 170 as of Sunday evening.

Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement stating that the disaster also caused 111 injuries and 42 people still missing. The local Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport also issued a statement stating that 47 of the country's 80 national highways are still blocked. Officials from Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation said that disasters caused by continuous heavy rainfall last Friday and Saturday caused serious losses to hydropower stations and irrigation facilities, with preliminary estimates of losses reaching about US$32.6 million.

Due to the damage of hydropower stations and transmission lines, power transmission was interrupted in many places in Nepal. The country's rainy season, recording higher than average rainfall in previous years, started in June and is now coming to an end.
