UNIFIL warns Israeli operations near its positions "extremely dangerous"

7/10/2024 5:48
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) warned on Sunday that Israel's operations near one of its positions in southern Lebanon were dangerous and compromised their safety.
"UNIFIL is deeply concerned by recent activities by the Israeli army immediately adjacent to the Mission's position 6-52, southeast of Maroun el-Ras inside Lebanese territory," the mission said in a statement on X.
"This is an extremely dangerous development. It is unacceptable to compromise the safety of UN peacekeepers carrying out their Security Council-mandated tasks," it added.
On Saturday, UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti said that its forces were still in their positions despite receiving a request from Israel to relocate some of their positions.
"The Israeli army informed UNIFIL on Sept. 30 of its intention to carry out limited ground incursions into Lebanon, and it also asked us to relocate some of our positions," Tenenti said, adding that, "Peacekeeping soldiers are still in all positions, and the UN flag remains raised."
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli army has been conducting an intensive attack on Lebanon in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah.
