Libyan authorities destroy 2 tons of explosive war remnants

The Libyan Ministry of Interior on Thursday announced destroying two tons of explosive remnants of war in the city of Misurata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.

"The Security Inspection and Explosives Dismantling Section of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (of the Interior Ministry) destroyed and disposed of two tons of explosive remnants," the Ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the explosives were destroyed in the Karakeem district of Misurata and the process was completed safely.

The explosive remnants were recovered by the Section from several different locations in the central Libyan region over the past few months, it added.

According to Fatma Zourrig, Chief of the Mine Action Section of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), more than 444 million square meters are still contaminated with mines and war remnants throughout Libya.
