Dissatisfaction with the US imposing tariffs on Hong Kong products

The Hong Kong SAR Government expressed strong dissatisfaction with the announcement by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security to impose a 10% tariff on Hong Kong products, as well as the U.S. Postal Service's suspension of Hong Kong Post's mail shipments containing goods to the United States.



A Hong Kong government spokesman said that the US's imposition of additional tariffs on Hong Kong products is a disregard for Hong Kong's status as a separate customs territory in accordance with Article 116 of the Basic Law and affirmed by the World Trade Organization. He also pointed out that as a founding member of the WTO, Hong Kong has always adhered to the principle of free and unimpeded trade. The Hong Kong government strongly opposes any action that attempts to damage Hong Kong's reputation and its status as a separate customs territory.



The Hong Kong government is closely monitoring developments. If the US does not correct its wrongdoings, it will take all possible actions, including through the WTO, to safeguard Hong Kong's legitimate rights and interests.
