Russian President Vladimir Putin noted Russia witnesses a growing number of large families at a meeting on Thursday with recipients of state awards.
Putin held a virtual meeting with nine Russian families from across the country, who have been awarded with the Order of Parental Glory, including mothers honored with the Mother Heroine title for raising ten or more children.
"According to sociologists, the number of people, who would like to start a large family is growing, the number of large families is also growing," Putin said, noting that societal values and priorities play a key role.
He congratulated all parents, grandparents and teachers ahead of the International Children's day.
"Such strong, close-knit families like yours have been and will remain a stronghold and the pride of our country," Putin said, noting Russia's unwavering commitment to traditional family values.
The president emphasized the importance of supporting large families, noting that this remains a national priority. He said it was necessary to boost efforts to expand comprehensive family support measures.
The number of large families in Russia increased from 2.4 million in January 2024 to 2.65 million in January 2025, according to the country's ministry of labor and social protection. Russia has introduced a demographic plan that aims to boost the fertility rate to 1.8 and increase the number of large families to over 2.7 million by 2036.
In his address to the Federal Assembly in February last year, Putin also announced the launch of a new national project dedicated to supporting the country's demographic development. According to a previous presidential decree, families with three or more children are considered large in Russia.
