14 killed in paramilitary forces attack on market in W. Sudan

5/6/2025 6:17
At least 14 people were killed on Wednesday in an artillery attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting a market inside a displacement camp in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan, a local official said.

"Fourteen people were killed, and a number of others were injured when the RSF militia shelled a popular market in the Abu Shouk camp today," Ibrahim Khatir, director-general of North Darfur State's health authorities, told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, the Emergency Room at Abu Shouk Camp, a volunteer group, confirmed in a brief statement on Wednesday that 14 people were killed and others wounded in a heavy artillery attack by the RSF targeting the Nyala Market inside the camp.

The RSF has not yet commented on the attack.

Since May 10, 2024, fierce clashes have raged in El Fasher between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its allied forces on one side, and the RSF on the other.

El Fasher serves as the administrative center of the Darfur region, which comprises five states. It is the region's largest city and the only state capital that remains outside RSF control.

Sudan remains gripped by a conflict between the SAF and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, both internally and across borders, deepening the country's humanitarian crisis.
