A woman has died and three more people have suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash north of Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW).
Police said in a statement that officers were conducting a routine patrol on Newcastle Road in a suburb of Newcastle, 115 km north of Sydney, when they sighted a car with unauthorized license plates just after 2:40 a.m. local time on Sunday.
Police were called to the scene of an accident following reports that the car had crashed head-on with a second car traveling in the opposite direction.
The passenger of the second vehicle, a woman believed to be aged 55, died at the scene. The 28-year-old female driver of that vehicle was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to the hospital in a serious condition.
The driver and front passenger of the first car allegedly fled the scene of the crash before police arrived, but two rear passengers, two girls aged 15 and 17, were hospitalized under police guard in serious condition.
Police have commenced a search for the driver and front passenger and have launched a critical incident investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
