A fire broke out at the Western District Food Wholesale Market on Hong Kong Island, but was put out by firefighters and no one was injured.
At about 9pm Wednesday, a foam box caught fire at the West District Food Wholesale Market on Fung Mat Road, burning a pile of wooden pallets. Four nearby parked cars and a lamp post were damaged.
The fire was once 4 meters by 4 meters in size. The fire was fierce and thick smoke filled the air. The fire department arrived at the scene and deployed a hose and a team of smoke helmets to put out the fire in about 13 minutes. No one was injured in the fire and no evacuation was required. After a preliminary investigation by the fire department, it was believed that the fire was caused by an unextinguished cigarette butt burning the foam box.
Affected by the incident, Fung Mat Road was closed for a time.
