Japanese actor Kenshin Uemura was convicted of molesting a female translator at the after-party for a fan meeting in Hong Kong and fined $15,000 at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts.
In sentencing, Magistrate Yu Chun-cheung noted that the female victim repeatedly used body language to indicate her disapproval, but the defendant ignored her and escalated his behavior. He also condemned the defendant's behavior as clearly disrespectful to women.
The charge alleges that 25-year-old Kenshin Uemura repeatedly rubbed and caressed the woman's thigh from under the stage at a after-party in March this year. The defense argued for leniency, arguing that the defendant had a promising future, but that this case had shattered over a decade of hard work. The defense also argued that the defendant had been fired by his management company and was required to pay approximately HK$3 million in liquidated damages. The defendant was under the influence of alcohol, which impaired his judgment. While his actions were reckless, they were not malicious. I hope the court will impose a fine.
