Man shot dead in northwest Sydney

A man has died following a shooting in Sydney's outer northwest suburbs.



A police statement said that emergency services were called to reports of a shooting at around 6 p.m.(local time) in a public place in the suburb of Riverstone, 38km northwest of central Sydney.



Officers arrived at the scene and found a man suffering gunshot wounds.



He was treated by ambulance paramedics, but died at the scene.



News Corp Australia newspapers reported that the victim, who has not yet been formally identified, was shot in the head.



About 15 minutes after the shooting, police were called to reports of a nearby car fire.



The blaze was extinguished by fire and rescue crews, but the vehicle was destroyed.



Police established crime scenes at both locations and were working to determine if the two incidents were linked.
