Nearly 560,000 Sudanese refugees enter Libya amid Sudan conflict

Over 559,920 Sudanese refugees have entered Libya since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in April 2023, making it one of the largest displacement crises in the region in recent years, a recently-published UN report showed.

The report, released Monday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, stated that 74,934 refugees were registered during the early phase of the conflict, bringing the total registered at the agency's Tripoli center to 91,494, with continued arrivals across Libya's southern and eastern borders.

The report noted that tighter border measures imposed by Libyan authorities have pushed many refugees to take longer and more dangerous routes. It added that Libya's borders with Sudan, Chad, and Egypt remain vast and difficult to monitor.

Accurately estimating the refugee population remains challenging due to irregular entry patterns and multiple crossing points, it said, noting that many refugees quickly move toward coastal cities upon entering Libyan territory.

On the humanitarian side, it said Sudanese refugees face major barriers to healthcare due to lack of official documentation and high medical fees, which have deprived many of basic services.
