Police official killed in roadside bombing in SE Iran

The explosion of a roadside bomb in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province on Friday killed a senior police official, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The report identified the victim as Nosrat Eftekhari, saying she was on a mission to address issues facing the ethnic groups and tribes living on the outskirts of the provincial capital city of Zahedan when the blast hit her police car.

Eftekhari was one of the provincial police's elite and a native inhabitant of the province, the report said.

The main individual behind the bombing was killed while attempting to flee, it said, adding that a number of police forces were wounded in the incident.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has seen repeated violence involving Iranian security forces, militants and drug traffickers, with both civilians and personnel targeted.
